Who should attend this Workshop?

Family members, partners, friends, clinicians, peer leaders, mental health professionals/clinicians, educators, those caring/treating individuals/ families affected by BPD. Those wishing  to implement. Mentalization techniques so as  to decrease misunderstandings and improve relationships.

Is the workshop helpful for those with BPD?

Those with lived experience, students, peer support providers. Rarely is why people with BPD feel or respond as they do  explained. We provides in-depth understanding of behavioral triggers, show how misinterpretations of intentions creates misunderstandings causing relationship ruptures.

What does the workshop include?

Coffee available 8:30–9:00 AM.
Lunch Saturday & Sunday, Coffee Break & snacks served. Handouts provided. Attend in-person or Virtually.
Socializing encouraged. Join others for dinner, especially those attending alone. Dress casually & comfortably.
Take notes, Bring notebooks and writing materials.

The History of Borderline Personality Disorder, Understanding Comorbidities & Commonalities: Why are they misdiagnosed?  Why do they all say the same things?

What's Going on Under The Hood? Understanding how Evolution and Genes Shaped our Brain Circuits & Connections. What Happens When They Go Wrong? The Importance of Building Trust in Family Relationships & Repairing Ruptures. Introduction to Mentalizing: Recognizing that others have minds of their own and do not always perceive things in the same way, resulting in misinterpretation of intentions. This can lead to stress, feelings of shame and isolation, and often triggers escalations and disconnection. Why Learning to Observe and Listen is So Important?
Sunday 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Learn how to mentalize so that you can decode and translate what your loved one is trying to tell you. Begin with Noticing and naming what you sense or see, check in by asking questions and verifying, with humility, if you are on the same page. Clarifying intentions and explaining your perspective can increase trust, decrease shame and create connection. Mentalization will show you how to predict reactions, avoid triggers and repair relationships. This workshop will empower you to help effectively.

PRESENTERS

Assisted by TARA UK colleague, Christella Dwyer, leader and co-founder of FACTS, a families and carers training support group in the UK. She co-developed a program for NHS clinicians to help them better support their patients diagnosed with BPD. She is a member of NHS steering groups aimed at improving services for people with BPD, volunteers for NHS check-in and chat service supporting carers of those with severe mental illness, and co-facilitates a ‘Rethink UK’ carer support group.
